To each is given a bag of tools, A shapeless mass and a book of rules;
And each must make, ere time is flown,
A stumbling-block or a stepping-stone.
by R. L. Sharpe

One morning I woke in a bit of an energetic mood. I remembered part of my dream from the last evening. In it I experienced the life I had dreamed about for many years — first through childhood, then into my teens and moving further into adulthood, into my 30s and beyond.

As a child I had envisioned a fancy lifestyle but kept my thoughts close to my chest. Since coming from scarcity, I was embarrassed about the dreams. My daily life was defined by the simple needs a growing, large prairie family goes through. As a child I was one who lived in my dreams never realizing this was only a passing phase of my life.

Once I entered the public-school system, I began noticing the attitudes and actions of my peers. Slowly maturing, I began to see and realize the abundance of the phrase “I can’t” The other kids used it more and more and watching the results I thought, “Wow — this seems to be a necessary way to attract attention”.
Even easy things could be avoided — like taking cough medicine, doing chores…
