A thermometer is a long glass tube filled with mercury. The point of it is to give a reading of the temperature of the environment around it. With warmth around it the mercury goes up and cold around it the mercury goes down. A quick glance at the thermometer will tell you if the temperature is where it should be.

Have you ever thought about how people operate like a thermometer? Substitute the mercury for our self-confidence. The self-confidence of people seems to rise and fall according to the “temperature” of other people’s opinions of them. When others think highly of them their self-confidence rises and when they think poorly of them their self-confidence drops dramatically.

There have been many throughout history who have given very sage advice re this. One of them is Eleanor Roosevelt who summarizes her advice this way;

“NO ONE CAN MAKE YOU FEEL INFERIOR WITHOUT YOUR CONSENT.”

You have no obligation to any one to let them decide how you are going to feel about yourself. You have the God-given right to understand the events in your own life and to judge yourself in your responses.
